Safety first

Shelby's life jacket came in the mail today. It's fits her nicely. Steven and thought it would be best for her to wear one when she's playing near swimming pools. We're not sure if she can swim. She looks happy in the picture, but I'm not sure she knows what to make of it. The jacket fits well and seems well constructed. I'll have to find a place for her to test out the jacket.

(Lifting her out of the water will be easy too.)

I've been wanting a pug for a long time now and will probably get one soon. I stumbled on your site a little while ago while doing some pug research and i cant stop checking it all the time! Shelby is adorable and its obvious how much she is loved =) I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your shelby blogs!

Just when I thought I'd seen every gratuitous money-sink available for a dog....

Why thank you! I researched a pug for 2 years before getting Shelby, and found that there wasn't much written on personal pug-raising experiences on the Web. I'm glad you enjoy Shelby's weblog. :)

So cute! She looks so happy to wear it too. Do you think she really needs it? I know I used to have a little dog who actually did a pretty good job swimming out of pools the few times she accidentally fell in.

I can't believe you got her a freakin' life jacket...

Now we've gotta see a photo of Shelby in her life jacket and goggles! :)

I have to second Lang's praise for your blog. I want a pug *so* bad, but I'm not at a point in my life where I can have a dog (not home enough + home is a condo where pets are not allowed). Your photos of Shelby always make me smile! Some day I'll have a pug...

I've been wanting to buy a life jacket for my pug but I didn't think they had them. Where did you order it from? I'm curious to see if he'll swim or just try and drink the water instead :P

Well Shelby did some swimming AND some drinking. :)

I found it on eBay, but I've seen them for sale at Petsmart, and if you search on the web, you should be able to find some. Outward Hound was the manufacturer for Shelby's life jacket, but there are many other brands. The price range for different brands is pretty large too. I found it as cheap as 12 and as expensive as 75.

ive been looking at shelby and i think you have my pugs twin they look exactly alike my pug even has a life jacket to cause my family owns a boat and its not safe for any dog not to have a life jacket same as you said around the pool. Well my pugs name is Lucy Liu and i love to show you some pics of cause im telling you our dogs look alike but that is a wonderful pics of shelby in the life jacket CUTE!!!!!!

Life jackets are essential for pugs who spend time around water because a Pug's body shape places most of the weight up front (notice that barrel chest and thick, short neck?), and those short little legs don't help much! They can sink like stones if they fall into the water. We have a boat and wouldn't dream of taking our little guy, Riley, out w/o his life vest.
You were right to be concerned about this issue. Have a great summer w/Shelby!

Where did you get the life jacket? I think ~10 people have asked so far.

I picked it up at Petsmart. I'm not sure if they still have them, but they seem to usually carry them during the summer.

I just purchased a jacket from Petsmart also. They have them for 20 bucks. My little pug Lucy loves the swimming pool and she tries her hardest to swim. If I let totally loose of her I'm afraid she would sink. I can't wait to try out the vest today.

I'm currently looking for a life jacket for my pug as he CAN'T swim. He sinks, if it's not for various flotation devices we plonk him on. I just found your Blog and was also just looking at the Outward Hound life jackets. Good know they are a good fit for a pug. :)
