Shelby shows her toys who's boss
Some of you may recognize the black pillow case containing Shelby's toys that she uses to dig. Sometimes I swing it around for her, and let her attack it. Now that she's 11 months old, she has an additional use for it... humping practice. Shelby's a girl, so this behavior is somewhat suprising, but we have heard from one of our friends that their girl dog also humps. And what kind of Web author would I be if I didn't provide the video. Click here to watch Shelby get romantic.

Since two months I have been an avid reader of Shelbys life. I love the site, with all the photos and the videos !
Humping in both females and males is an action of dominance - think of apes and monkey males on males humping at the edge of a groups territory-
so, while you can let her hump the bag, she should not be humping you two. Having apug myself and having allowed her to do it, not knowing the significance, we were astonished at her notlistining to sit, down etc any longer: took us awhile to position ourselves at the top of the pack. She had even started growling at us...
anyway, our girls name is Tomm ie and she is a lively three year old, with a blog coming up soon !

could you tell us where you got Shelby's snuggle ball bed? I didn't know if you got it from a special place... I've found that our pug loves digging - and we're in need of a bigger bed for her... thanks!

That video is too hilarious! My pug never humps anything after he got snipped, but Shelby is something else. She's sweet.

Hey. I just started reading your blog, because I love pugs though I am sadly not an owner. Lovely site and dog though.

CUTE site! We own a black pug, Star, and he didn't start humping until AFTER he was fixed. I don't understand and neither me, nor my partner, know WHAT to do about it. But it's nice to know that we are not the only couple experiencing this "problem". Star's favorite is his bed, but he'll hit up our cat, Brewster, for some "play" from time to time as well (he's OBVIOUSLY a top, which my fiancee is oh so proud of). I have noticed that he DOES only do it when he is very active and aggressive, though, so that's most likely the reason. Thank you again for sharing and you have been added to our favorites, so we will be checking in from time to time.

Omigosh!!! That is TOO funny!!!! I'll never be able to hear that song again without thinking of Shelby!!
I have 2 pugs, Murphy (13) and yes, another Shelby (5). Your Shelby reminds me so much of Murphy when she was a pup. She's still feisty, don't get me wrong, but she was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy 3-1/2 years ago and is slowly losing the use of her back legs. She has a K-9 cart for walks and park outings, and just zooms around in it!
Anyway, this is my first time to post, just wanted to say thanks for the great web site!! And especially this video clip, it's hilarious!!

The way I got Xander, my pug, to stop trying to hump me was to say "No!", roll him over on his back, and stare at him until he looked away. My understanding is that this reaffirms my place as alpha leader. I also now make sure he does not walk in front of me when I take him for walks and that I go in and out of doors first. I got that tip from "The Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel.

Omgosh, I was so concerned when my pug girl started doing this! The odd thing is she only does it to me (female) and not my husband or anything else! I don't understand it, apparently she thinks she is dominant over me maybe? Well we tell her no anytime she tries it but we can never tell when she is going to sneak up and attempt it, one minute she is all sweet and cuddly and licking my arm or something then she like grabs on and tries to molest me! I thought we had a lesbian dog for a while (no that there is anything wrong with that). We will definetly be working on some more tips to make sure she realizes who is top dog in this house! :)
p.s. That video is HILARIOUS!

our girl dog started humping and someone told us it was about dominance and so we needed to tell her no and flip her on her back when she does it. It has worked so far!

I was also concerned but I guess it is just second nature to them. My first female pug did this often and she had this cadbury bunny toy that would just "bawk" it's protest at her affections. lol.
