Is my dog fat?
Due to the nice weather, we've brought Shelby out with us a lot more this week. Shelby got a lot of attention, but Steven and I noticed that several people affectionately commented that Shelby is chubby. Hmmm. Now Steven and I have always felt that Shelby was big, but we thought she carried it well. Steven was offended at the first mention of her being fat, but by the third comment (in the same week), we began to wonder if we just couldn't see it because she's our dog. And so we brought her to the dog park to get some exercise. Other pug owners told us that they didn't think she was fat, but Shelby was the biggest pug there.
Shelby (in the green collar) gets overrun by two other pugs.
A face off between Sammy and Shelby.
Crazy pug wrestling next to Steven's leg.
Shelby pauses to let Sammy get to know her.
Shelby rolls over for everyone. She's quite the submissive dog.

Maybe she's just big boned? Most people think pugs are fat because of their log like shape. :) Try the rib test. I've heard people say that if you feel your dog's side, you should be able to feel the individual ribs of the dog. If it all kinda blends together, then maybe ask your vet.

I don't think Shelby's fat. She's just a pug, and IMO, most "pet" pugs are a little on the scrawny side. My pugs get a pretty good amount of exercise, and they're husky -- they're also champions, so I think there are some AKC judges who agree w/ us that our dogs are NOT fat.

My Max is a husky pug, as well. I felt bad too for awhile until I noticed how much taller he is than most pugs. Now, I don't woory too much about it.

Shelby looks to be the perfect dimensions for a pug..... LOTS of people comment about our Pug being over weight as well.. I think it has alot to do with their barrel shape..

I own a Pug and most people say that he is pretty fat too. But the majority of those people don't know anything about Pugs, so they just say that he is fat. We as fellow Pug owners know that it's okay if our Pugs are a little pudgy, but not extremely pudgy, which Shelby does not look like she is. So I wouldn't worry if I were you. But when the vet says she's a little too fat then you should start worrying :P

Our Daisey May weighs about 15lbs. She gets alot of exercise though! She and our Lab play and wrestle all day long!I can't understand why the Lab is fat though! Daiseys' new thing is playing with her tennis balls, she hides them in the couch cushions then jumps and drives her face into the cushion to try to get them out! Its hysterical!!! She's a high energy dog! We haven't started walking yet, its STILL snowing here and very cold(12 degrees right now) for her so we don't take her out for very long. She looks so pathetic when she shivers and holds up one little paw!!

Oh, for pete's sakes, your pug isn't FAT!! She's adorable. Call me when she reaches 32 pounds. That's where my pug (Spaz) is at!! He's HUGE.

I would not even worry about yout pug. Its almost like being called fat comes with the territory. My pug is 17 pounds and the vet had me put her on a weight maintainence dog food so she doesn't get any bigger. Don't be offended by others comments, pugs are supposed to be "a lot of dog in a little space".

I agree with everyone else. Pugs are meant to be barrel shaped. People have made the same comment about our Sadie, and she's actually the perfect weight for her bones. Besides...people should know better than to say things like that. Sheesh :)

A local dog park might help Jake get back in shape, and have fun at the same time.

I have 2 little boy pugs. Winston is smaller very active and about 22lbs. Theodore loves to lay and watch Winston run, and is around 32lbs. They have the same father but different mothers. The vet always tell me Theodore should weight the same as Winston. Theodore eats way less and is taller. I'm not sure what to do.

Our pug Humphrey has been dieting all his wonderful life. Everyone who meets him says "my he the fattest dog I have ever seen." Well they can go pug themselves. He has a large ribcage, and very, very thick hair. Fat indeed. He is wonderful, and so is your dog.
