What to do about that stinky hoof

Shelby really likes calf hoofs to chew on. At 85 cents each, they're the cheapest chew toy at the pet store, and she just loves them. However, I am not as big a fan. They smell bad and Shelby likes to drag it around the house, and chew them near me, so that I can't escape the smell. Gross. For a little while, we didn't buy them anymore because we didn't want the house to smell like a barn.

So the solution that we came up with was to drill a hole in the hoof, and tie it to her crate. We are pleased, and Shelby is pleased.

Be very careful drilling the hole. Clamping down the hoof is a good idea so that it doesn't spin out of control.

I always love the fact that you guys are able to think "outside the box" to find ways to keep Shelby and yourselves happy. You are a very good pug Mommy!!

Nice plan. I get my boys rawhides, and they take them all over the house. They get sticky, and if they leave a sticky rawhide on the sofa or the bed, it's kinda gross.

I need to figure something like this out.

We've found that hooves really contribute to the icky doggie zits on Cosi's chin. Our vet said that the hooves and especialy rawhides aren't good for dogs and recommends the beef/marrow bones from the market. We get two huge ones for about a buck fifty and they last forever. The marrow/beefy part is gone within a day but the bones themselves are definitely the favorite chew toys here.

My chihuahua, Twinkie, really likes bully sticks. They are also really stinky- and we found out a few weeks that they're made of bull penis. Ewwwwww.

Well, I'm a country girl, and all I can say is........"city people!" If you only knew what the dogs on the farm chew on!!!! Actually horse hooves are good for them, and dried pigs' ears, they love those too! My girlfriends' lab always sneaks off with fresh horse manure! She really has to watch her because she gets sick after eating it! Go figure!!
