Steven and I are looking at some remodelling, specifically new flooring. And since Shelby's here, we're challenged with selecting a color palette that we like, that also doesn't show off Shelby's tendency to shed. Our existing carpet is Shelby colored, and therefore we rarely see the fur. We don't want to mess up a good thing. We're considering tile to replace some of the carpeted areas, and we want to make sure that her shedding fur doesn't stand out. Shelby's somewhat perplexed as we make her sit on these tiles and give her a good scratch to loosen up some fur. So far, all the tile samples have fared well.

JUST REMEMBER WHEN YOU'RE THINKING OF REPLACING CARPET WITH TILE THAT SHELBY COULD HURT HERSELF REALLY BAD WHEN SHE TRIES TO RUN ON TILE. THEIR LITTLE HIPS ARE EASILY HURT! BETTER TO VACUUM UP THE HAIR THAN HAVE TO PUT HER DOWN BECAUSE O A HIP INJURY.

I wouldn't worry about tiles and slippage. Our pug which we owned for 12 years made the downstairs his den and that was covered entirely in tile. He had no problems apart from some slip and slide when it was time to mop the floors. It was more a game for him anyway. The only accidents I remember was when he slipped from the staircase and fell a few steps. He was unhurt but very shocked. Pugs do require love and care but in the same way you look out for a small child, but not to the point of excessiveness.

Some tiles have a slight texture to them to give them better traction. Tiles with a "glossy" finish are slippery and dangerous. This is the kind I have in my foyer. I covered them with an area rug after I saw one of my puggies wipe out and slide into a wall. Luckily he didn't hurt himself. When I built my house I didn't have my pugs(or any pet for that matter) so pug-proofing wasn't a concern. All the hardwoods are covered with area rugs and runners too. Next house- wall to wall carpet! LOL!

Ditto to hardwoods and tile - Merry went the first four years of her life without being near *any* carpet whatsoever, just tile and hardwood. Dogs just learn to run a little differently on those surfaces, so they *don't* go crash and boom all the time.

Goodness, I didn't realize how popular a topic this would be. Shelby grew up on Pergo. And we currently have half wood floors and half carpet. She rarely trips up. I think if we end up going with tile, that we'll put down area runs just because Steven and I would like some warmth.

After a year living w/ mostly fawn carpet, I moved with Gizmo and Gadget to a place with mostly polished concrete floors, and it took me quite a while to get used to having to clean the floors so often.
Regular brushing, along with a good swiffer (and now a roomba) are good tactics to use to combat the evil pug hair enemy.
