Conehead

Shelby woke us up the other night be constantly licking her paw. This morning, I noticed her paw was red and slightly irritated. I wasn't sure if this was from her licking, an allergy, or something more sinister. I had to see what her paw looked like without the licking, so I pulled out the cone from her spay surgery, and on it went. Shelby put up with it at first, but she's a bit disappointed about it now. She has a hard time getting around, playing, and drinking.

And I'm sure her paw or her face must itch. It must be bothersome to not be able to scratch it. We felt sorry for her, so we gave her some scraps of rotisserie chicken from the table.

Wiggle had the same problem before and the vet said that it was the pesticides/fertilizers on the grass that irritated him. If that's the case for Shelby, take her to the vet as it won't go away by itself.

Our girl Kricket has the same thing, the
best guess we have is sometimes if they
have been playing too hard and running
jumping and such they must get a pain
that to us is the same as a strained
wrist or elbow. Sounds weird but we have
never found any open sore or red spot.
If she hasn't been anywhere to pick up
chemicals of some kind, maybe a little
rest is all it needs!!
Give Shelby a hug and Happy Easter
to you and yours!!

I have a dog with similar licking problem and what worked for us was Itch Stick: http://tinyurl.com/f7fl2

You can usually find it at any PetSmart and it helps sooth the itching and leaves a bad taste so it truly breaks the cycle.

I always check in on ya'll during my lunch break, when my crazy coworker has started in on one of her crazy stories and it's my job to just nod and mumble mm-hmm. I know that sounds terrible, but I'm very patient with her all day long - I won't give up my lunch break too! Anyway, you made me almost spit a grape at my screen with that "darkmeat" version of the lamb. I needed a laugh because the crazy stories have been very serious today, so that hit me just right.
Gizmo has itching issues in addition to his other issues, and the vet recommended a vitamin with fatty acids. He's been taking it for a couple weeks now, and it has seemed to help. It's also supposed to improve his coat and reduce shedding, so I'm hoping that is true as well. I could make a whole pug from the hair out of the hair I vacuum up every few days!

My pug, Daisy, has the samw problem and the vet told my husband and I to try giving her Benedril. It seems to work, it just makes her a little sleepy.

DaiseyMay licks her paws alot too, but never to the point that they get red, I guess we're lucky about that huh?

I ust love Shelby. I also have a pug as well as a white boxer. They look like mutt and jeff but they are seriously best friends. I am almost as attached to Shelby as I am my little Bam. They are truly charaters. I hope she feels better.

Just want to thank everyone again for all of your support and to Winnie, thanks for such a great site and for allowing me to seek guidance your site. Just a brief update: Mike and I picked up a 13 week old female fawn pug today from a local breeder. Her name is Fiona. She is adorable and absolutely exhausted from the car ride which seemed to be terrifying to her -- we felt so bad. She is snoring on Mike's lap right now and we are just butter around her. She both pooped and peed in the house tonight -- so I think we are in for a lesson in housebreaking! Thanks again, we ARE SO EXCITED TO HAVE OUR OWN LITTLE FURBABY, FIONA!

Hi Rick,

Poor Mr. Magoo. Did the vet mention the possibilities of allergies?

I hope he feels better soon.

hi winnie,

oh and thanks for your concern too

Posted by: rick | Oct 28, 2008 9:50:15 PM

i know there's some organic options, and some low-ingredient options. Shelby is on a low-ingredient food called Pinnacle Duck and Potato. I follow mypugsblog.com and Meimei and Miko get home cooked meals to help deal with Miko's allergies. The vet could possibly prescribe a special food if you suspect allergies.

Good luck, and please let us know how mr magoo is doing.
