Yesterday Shelby was a very bad pug. She really embarassed me.
We went out for a walk, and not 12 feet from the front door, a happy black lab with a tennis ball in its mouth came trotting by with his people. We were getting ready to cross the street, and as we started to cross, I heard a high pitched scream. I thought it was the other dog, but no, it was Shelby.
When we got downtown, this bad behavior continued. Everytime she saw a dog, she would frantically pull towards it, and her bark would turn into a loud scream. Not a cute scream. It was like a rabid monkey. I think she freaked out all the people downtown dining outdoors. We couldn't believe it. What's possessed her?
I didn't get video because it happened too fast, but I found this video on YouTube with a Frenchie that is making a similar sound. Shelby didn't sound as cute as this dog. (more like the aforementioned rabid monkey.)
Has anyone else experienced this? What's causing it? We took her out for a walk today, and she was very good around the other dogs.

Both of my pugs do this when strangers walk by w/o paying any attention to them. I don't know why nor do I remember when it started, but recently the older one of the two now yells at cars when we go on our last walk of the night.
except, they don't yell at women. They seem to fancy themsleves ladies men.

moxie only does that when i try to clip her nails or occassionally when i go to pick her up and she resists, it's her bratty way of getting all over dramatic and acting like i'm hurting her when i know for a fact i am not!
hasn't done it to other dogs, but on occassion instead of her one bark "hello" she goes into a frenzy and pulls like crazy at the end of a leash when certain dogs are in view. i have no clue what it is about the few dogs this has happened with, like she is getting bad vibes from them or something, but i get embarassed too! i hate it, to the other owners i look like i can't even keep control of my tiny dog, but really i spent months at home training her and she typically is very good!

I KNOW THIS NOISE. ALL I HAVE TO DO IS PICK UP TOENAIL CLIPPERS. OR GET UP IN THE MORNING AND NOT SAY HI. OR COME HOME FROM WORK AND NOT SAY HI. OR ONLY TAKE ONE PUG (I HAVE 5) OUTSIDE WITH ME. ONE OF MY PUGS IS 17 AND HE DOESN'T SEE OR HEAR VERY WELL. EVERY NOW AND AGAIN HE THINKS HE'S BEEN LEFT ALONE AND MAKES A WORSE NOISE, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT. THIS PUG THAT IS WOBBLEY ON HIS FEET CAN MAKE THAT GODAWFUL NOISE BE HEARD 3 BLOCKS AWAY. GOTTA LOVE THEM THO.

No idea. It sure is a horrifying sound.
I was thinking about the doggie door though. You could fasten a curtain of some kind to some suction cups and stick it on the glass door, so when it was closed it blocked the doggie door.

Yahtzee does this exact same thing whenever we put her in her kennel and we get ready to leave. It's horrifying. I've never, in my life, heard a noise like this coming from another dog. However, I am very flad to hear that my pug isn't the only one cross-bred with a rabid-monkey...

Winston makes that aggravated noise when I
used to take him the veterinarian to have
his toenails clipped. The first time I heard
it,I was like..that must be my pug,
Even the lady sitting next to me was saying
"it sounds like that dog is being tortured".
I told her that's my dog, he does
that when his nails are being trimmed."
Whoever invented the cordless dremel
is a saint.

Whew! I thought my pug Daisy was a freak! Now she's just normal . . . hahahaha

I have a pug/sharpei mix. She makes that noise on the rare occasion when she has had to sleep locked in her kennel and needs to go out to go potty in the morning. She also does it when she can't catch a fly.

Perhaps the black lab's doggie smell triggered some unpleasant memory for Shelby. If she only does this occasionally, I wouldn't worry about it. Pugs, especially female ones, are very opinionated and freely express their opinions, usually with great drama.

Niles makes the "oh my god, you're killing me" noise when I take him to the vet. The other animals' people just look at me funny and go is he ok?? I'm like ya, he's fine, he makes this noise all the time. It's funny.

I tend to agree with the poster who said it might have been a reaction to the smells on/of the Lab. But still, I have to say, that is a pretty hilarious sound!!! But for your sake, I hope it was a one-time thing with Shelby.

I had no idea any dog could make a sound like that.

Kricket loves to go for car rides and carries on something like that when she sees her travel case...but I must admit if Shelby sounds like that video,I think she has Krickets' noise beat hands down !!!!

Our pug Bess would scream like an alien whenever she got upset or excited.
Posted by: Shelby | Jul 22, 2006 9:55:22 AM
Bam did that to us one night in the middle of the night. We were visiting my parents, about 6 hours away, and after the long car ride we were all exhausted. He woke up in the middle of the night making that noise. We thought he had gotten out of the room and my mom's dog was attacking him. Scared me so bad I almost fell out of bed. Never heard it again. Glad to know it is somehow "common". Makes wonder how their little minds work though, doesn't it.

Myug child Maggie did that when we brought her home as a pup. Only at night when we put her in her cage to sleep.
It stopped when I put her in bed with us...been there ever since.
It does sound like a rabid monkey or alien!!!

I love Shelby! she is so cute! I've been a fan for a long time. Now thinking of getting a pug. That scream sounds like my bird when we take her to get her nails and wings clipped. Ah yes, I've heard that noise, but not from a dog. Must've been pretty terrifying though. Hope she stops doing that.

Our Pug Chun Mee thinks she is the mayor of our street. Any dog is warned away by screaming. It is worse now that Grandma has moved across the street. She can look out of the window and squeal at potential trouble at Gran's. I was told that Pugs would not alert their people, ha ha ha.

That's the nail cutting scream. At our house it is accompanied by fighting like a two ton bear. How many humans does it take to hold down a 21 pound pug and a 28 pound pug for their nail clippings? We don't know - we've never sucessfuly done it!

I was going to say that sounds EXACTLY what Chewie does when we (three people) clip his nails, and I thought that would be original. Apparently all pugs sound like a woman screaming bloody murder at pedicure time...

I think she's trying to be like this pug:

Seymour does this all the time! Especially when I walk in the door to our apartment after being at work all day. He SCREAMS so so loud! It's embarrassing for me, because we live in an apartment and I KNOW the neighbors hear it all the time! He's cute though, and worth it!!
