It was just another boring walk when suddenly...

Ho hum. Just hanging out in front of the coffee shop. I'm not sure if we've bought the chicken pot pie by the time I took this photo, but she sort of looks like she has her begging face on. She tried twice to get that pot pie. (Naughty girl.)

Out for a walk

And the walk was pretty uneventful, until we came across this...
Praying Mantis

A praying mantis. We never see those around here! It was not actually Shelby who first found it. I brushed it off as a wayward grasshopper. It was Steven who identified it, and once we started staring at it (and in Steven's case, nudging it with a sitck) Shelby took interest.

We do get those around here, and they can change colour in the fall and get BIG. They also fly. In the fall they like to climb our screen door and sunbathe. Ruby will NOT walk past that door with one of those things on it LOL.

If she sees one on the patio or sidewalk she gives it a WIDE berth - walks by it giving it what we call the "stranger with candy" look. Tee hee!

We have them around here all the time. Our kids love to play with them. But they break if the kids bat them too hard with a foot. Oh, darn!

I once found one on my windshield in the mall parking lot (odd?) They are pretty rare, even on the east coast.

Down South we call them "Devil's Horse"

It's not easy to say no to that face.

Shelby has the perfect "I want some" face. Mia uses that face when she wants something (usually food). When that doesn't work, she follows up with an invasion of personal space and not so obvious nudging to remind you she is there.

We have quite a few praying mantis in So. Cal. foothills. They are quite destructive to flowers and foliage around here. Fortunately, Mia hasn't noticed them yet.....

Shelby is so darn cute!! That expression as she is looking up at the camera is priceless. She never fails to make me smile and brighten my day!

Cool bug - how did it taste?

Oh how she wanted to eat it, or at least play with it, but we've seen one too many nature shows displaying the mating practices of the praying mantis. We like Shelby too much to tussle with such a tough bug.

What kind of harness does Shelby have? My pug needs a new one and that one looks comfy. Thanks :)

That's a puppia harness we bought at a local pet shop. Shelby seems to like it, but she does pull.

I first found Shelby when I fell and broke my elbow. Shelby was the animal I found when I googled 'sore paw'. Today I went to wash my hands and a grasshopper / praying mantis / cricket creature landed on my hand - straddled across my hand above the thumb with feet gripping both sides. It scared me senseless until I remembered Shelby's nonemotional response to creatures like these. She's fast becoming my guru on nearly any subject. :) Get better soon Shelby.

Haha! I had no idea that Shelby was so wise. It seems I've underestimated her. :)
