Uh oh! Broken nail

On Wednesday, I got a call from my mom.

"Hello Winnie, this time, it's your dog..."

And she proceeded to tell me that Shelby was bouncing around getting really excited over someone coming over, and before you knew it, her foot was bleeding all over the place. She had broken a toe nail, and wanted to know what we thought she should do.

We suggested that she bandage it up, and if it kept bleeding, to take Shelby to the vet. The bleeding stopped, and everything seemed fine. That night Vin told us the story, as only a 3 year old could tell it.

This morning I was giving Shelby a nice scratch / massage when I noticed something black sitting next to the bed.

Egads! That's her whole nail! Her passenger side rear nail was completely gone! None of us had realized how dramatic the break had been. She wasn't bleeding, or favoring the foot, but we decided to bring her to the vet anyway.

Vin, though still getting over a cold, cried and begged to come with Shelby and me to the vet. He had been playing Animal Doctor the past few days, with the two of us getting suited up in "scrubs" wearing stethescopes, and bandaging up his stuffed "patients." Despite his voice still sounding like Peppermint Patty's, I took him with us. He was considerably happier than Shelby over the visit.

70 dollars later, we left with a small bottle of antibiotics, an ambivolent dog, and a boy who was quite pleased with himself.

So far, so good. We're just to keep her foot clean, and make sure she takes her antibiotics, which means that Shelby will be eating "american cheese surprise" twice a day for the next week.

Well, at least Shelby will be enjoying the cheese treat, I'm sure! Hopefully everything will go fine with that. :)

the nail will probably grow back. one of my pugs ripped his nail badly, i called the vet and he told me to wrap a paper towel around it and pull it out quickly. i did and mugsy never flinched, so i'm sure it didn't hurt him. held pressure still it stopped bleeding, washed it up real well, and he did great, no infection at all. the nail did grow back, but it was a little crooked. oh well, no problem for him.

I agree...cheese is the cure all for pugs! Mine find it to be like Manna from heaven...and heaven is the large cold box from which food is magically made, lol.

Nail breaks are common with dogs and I often find nails lying about. My pugs actually bite their nails...weird, I know.

Poor little girl! She deserves to have cheese after that tramatic experience. What a good brother Vin is to take care of his sister pug. Hugs and kisses to them both. Maybe Shelby should get a new toy also?!

Awe this happened to my Murphy a few years back. He was so excited to get out of his crate he took a flying leap and ripped off his nail. As a crazy pug mama I was thinking he tore the quick of his nail and was going to bleed out. Thank goodness I was wrong. The vet just told us to keep an eye on it. It grew back fine and he has never jumped out of his crate like that again!

Get better, Shelby! That's a pretty freaky thing to have happen, but it's good to know it will get better.
