A pug in lamb's clothing
I caught a cold on Saturday night, and had to relax and recooperate all day. I was really bored. So again, we have Shelby falling victim to my boredom. Here we have Shelby modelling a dog coat made of mock shearling fabric that looks oddly similar to her Lamiedoodle toy. I based the dog coat on Simplicity 8928, but added my own collar. I'm not terribly impressed with how the back of the coat fits Shelby, but she doesn't seem to mind wearing this jacket, which is good enough for me.

I need to learn to sew. I've become obsessed w/ my pug, :D and last night I got him this sweater and was beside myself amused at just how adorable he is in it. I could go broke buying him clothes, so I need to learn to make them! Are dog clothes easy to make? I take it that patterns for dog clothes are easy to find? First I gotta learn how tho'. I haven't sewn since 7th grade (and I'm 35!) :D

Sewing for Shelby isn't really hard, but fitting her is. I'm still trying to figure out the right fit and the right materials to use so that the neckline doesn't end up sliding down at her shoulders. The good thing is that she's not really picky about what she wears. :)
I've only found two patterns at the store. They are part of costume section of the pattern books.

I have found good patterns very hard to find. When I was looking for patterns that I wanted I ended up making my own. I have sense gotten pretty good at it. I made my dogs some clothes and have now started my own business making dog clothes after I had so many people requesting my clothes. I did start out making just for dachshunds as that is what I have. But I now make clothes for any dog breed. I even made some for a friend of mine who also has a pug.

I would like to make my own dog clothes, but all of the pattern books I find are in japanese. Do you know of any GOOD pattern books that are in english? appreciate any feedback. Thanks D-

I only know pattern books for people, not for dogs. I've used Patternless Fashion and Flat Pattern Design by MacDonald. And the books on CD fron Kenneth King are very good. http://www.kennethdking.com/book.html
These are all books that teach the basics of how to draft a pattern and manipulate the pattern. The same principles apply to pug wear, but making the moulage is trial and error. I'll try to scan Shelby's pattern and post it on the site for others to download.

Hi!
I am a textiles and fashion teacher at Berwick High School, England. I am hoping to do a dog coat project and wondered if you had any tips. Also, would you have a small, medium and large flat pattern which the pupils could adapt for their own designs?
Thank you
Norma Miles

My yorkshire terrier "buttons" is a real fan of doggie fashion items. He struts like a little prince and is so proud of all the tiny fashion wardrobe items I buy for him. Some people say it's cruel to dress dogs as humans but when you see the sparkle in my little angels eyes when we go shopping then you would quickly change your mind.

I am also interested in making clothes for my pug. Thus far I've not been satisfied about the fit around the neck and arms. I'm just not good at drafting patterns. I love the "lamb" coat you made for Shelby. Any luck in scanning Shelby's pattern so I can try my skills in making a coat for my Bella? Thanks so much!
