Fortunate pug

Before we bought Shelby, I researched the history of the breed. I discovered that the lo-tse (the ancestor of the pug) originated in China, and it was ideal for the wrinkles on the forehead to resemble a character. Ideally it would be the character for "prince" which is supposed to look like a W. I'm not sure if the character for prince has changed, but it doesn't look much like a W to me.

And even though Shelby isn't a lo-tse, I thought it would be fun to figure out what character her wrinkles looked like. My mom did a bunch of research and found this character for "Fortune" which I think looks a lot like Shelby's forehead.

And we feel very fortunate that she's part of the family. :)

Happy Chinese New Year from Melbourne Australia.

I love reading about Shelby more so since we have brought into our family a gorgeous little pug called Coco.

She is now 5 months old and a bundle of energy - every day we are in fits of laughter over her antics.

First, I'd like to say that Shelby is adorable and I love coming to read about her adventures. Second, I'd like to ask a question. How long did it take for her to be housebroken? I have a 3 month old female. The breeder started her with paper training and I am not continuing. She only does well when she's crated. Plus, she seems to "get" the point of going outside, but she also thinks it's okay to go whenever and wherever in my kitchen. She gives no indication (like barking or whining) to let me know she needs out. If you have any tips, I'd appreciate them. Thanks!

It took about 5 weeks for Shelby to figure out appropriate places to poop. We also crated her, and we litter box trained her.

As far as pooping in the house, she got a big scolding whenever she did. And I also fed her in multiple places in the house. I heard that dogs don't poop in what they consider to be "their cave" and their cave is supposedly where they eat. That being said, she still did demonstrative poops when she felt she was being neglected, or when she was panicky from being separated from us for a few months, but after much scolding, she figured out that wasn't a very good idea.
