A very hot weekend

We took Shelby out for a walk in the morning, and we didn't make it back in time to beat the heat. Poor Shelby. It's 100ยบ and she's got ashort nose and a fur coat. We gave her lots of water along the way. We took the shady path home. And we let her call the shots as far as where she was going to take a break. Here she is clowning around in a cool patch of lawn. We're pretty close to home by the time I took this picture, and we gave her a bunch of ice cubes in her water, wiped her down with a cool rag, and let her rest on the bed while I fanned her.

One trick I often use with Merry to cool her down quickly, since fanning really only helps those of us that perspire :): I make or purchase fruit smoothie drinks (the organic, all natural kind that are made from fruit, fruit, and only fruit - or carrot juice) and then fill up the cups of a muffin tin 1/2 way with the mixture and freeze. I end up with "puppy popsicles" that are delicious to eat and frozen. Takes Merry and 5 minutes to lick one to death, and by the time she's done she's completely cooled down. Hope that helps!

A similar situation for Woody yesterday.
I put ice cubes in his water but it seems he's afraid of ice cubes?
(Where did you get Shelby's pretty harnass?)

You take such good care of your "Queen of
Sheba"--oops, I mean Queen Shelby! Glad to see she is over her tummy rash, her swollen eyelids and is happy and wallowing
in the coolness of the grass. We love your
photographs and descriptions of Shelby's adventures. Keep up the great Pug Site.
Thank You!!

My owners shaved me this weekend. Keeps me cooler not to mention I shed less. Plus, we pugs don't really look that much different without the fur. You can check out on my blog to see how normal I look shaved.

oh my gosh! She is so cute ^_^. Anyway, a trick we do for our pups is letting her lay down on a cooling pad or chilled herbal pillow. She falls right asleep and she is comfy

Thanks for the tips. The doggie popsicle sounds interesting.

We bought Shelby's harness at a dog boutique. It's also available online as the "step in harness."

It looks like Shleby is putting on a show! Interesting popsicle idea. Does anyone know how fruit juices really are for dogs? I dont want anyone to get sick.

Safety of juices: A lot of better, probiotic dog foods have organic berries in them, and I've had to give Merry apple juice and cranberry juice (vet recommended) when she has mild bladder infections, so I am sure they're safe. The most important thing is to ensure that there's no added sugars or preservatives - which is why I'll often make my own, blending up a tub of raspberries with a little water to make the smoothie, and then freezing that. Bolthouse Farms also makes a great natural carrot juice smoothie.
